After a period where physical meetings have not been possible Food Fortress were pleased to meet and engage with members at two meetings - one hosted Southern members of the network at Horse and Jockey, Co Tipperary while the second was run jointly with Queens University in Belfast.
Leading the discussion at both events was Robin Irvine, Director of Food Fortress who outlined the continued growth of the program which now covers close to 80% of compound feed production on the island of Ireland. He also outlined the governance of the program which operates as a collaborative network, not for profit and owned and directed by its membership.
Professor Chris Elliot of Queens University Belfast (QUB) reported on the contamination risks to the Feed and Food chain and the new and emerging threats to the industry. Mycotoxins in particular came under the spotlight and the potential for feed efficiency to be impacted by these toxins has implications for the profitability and sustainability of livestock production.
